Maths 'Talk Moves' By Miss O'B

Room 5 Problem Solving Challenge!

Room 5 have been working on our problem solving skills and strategies in mathematics. We were lucky enough to have a mathematics expert come into our classroom on Wednesday to help us understand and build up our problem solving skills and strategies.
We looked at how to look at problems and how to challenge our mathematical thinking through accountable talk and questioning techniques. We learn't how to ask effective questions and that we need to explain our thinking when problem solving. But most of all we learnt that taking a risk with our learning is our biggest strength in helping us to grow academically.

Procedure Writing By Miss O'B

Creative Shape Procedure Writing!

For writing in Room 5 we have been learning about the purpose and structure of procedure writing.
During our procedure unit we have made ANZAC biscuit recipes, written how to throw a tennis ball correctly to a partner to catch and now we have written up a mystery shape for our Year 5 & 6 class mates to attempt to create following only our set procedure information.
We enjoyed this 'mystery shape challenge'. Testing it was very fun and we enjoyed involved others in our success and learning from them.
The next procedures we are going to write about will be our Totem Poles which we are looking to create later in the term. Watch out for our progress.

ANZAC Commemorative Assembly 2015 By Molly, Charlotte, Heather, Jazmine and Julia

ANZAC Assembly 2015

Room 5 have been learning all about World War 1. We have read about it and written about it especially with the 100 year anniversary of the landing this year.
In our class we have been reflecting, remembering, understanding and celebrating the contribution of the New Zealand and Australian soldiers at Gallipoli, Turkey. To acknowledge this legacy they have left behind our class organised and invited the community to our ANZAC Commemorative Assembly. This included singing the National Anthem, placing the memorial crosses by the flag pole, researching and ordering them in rank, Conor sharing his ANZAC writing piece, playing of the last post and the raising of the flag.
Here are some photos from our ANZAC day assembly held today. Lest we forget.

ANZAC Memorial Crosses 2015 By Miss O'B

ANZAC Memorial Crosses

Toko School was delivered in the mail thirty memorial crosses to make up for a memorial to represent our fallen soldiers in World War 1 and to acknowledge the 100 year anniversary of the event.
These crosses had a procedure of how to make each of them inside the box. As a challenge we were asked to make them up following the procedure as this linked to our writing.
We had to first create the crosses, add the soldiers names to them and the silver fern. We then had to nail in the bottom of the cross so they would stand up in the ground. We are going to place them by our flag pole during our ANZAC assembly which is coming up on Tuesday.
We really enjoyed learning all about the soldiers, their rank and what they contributed to their time at war.

Vanuatu Gift Package By Julia and Charlotte

Relief Aid for Vanuatu

In Room 5 we learn't and followed the natural disaster in Vanuatu and how it effected the people that live there. We felt helpless for them and their communities so we decided to be proactive and do something that could make even the smallest of difference and to bring comfort to them during their recovery period.
We decided on a care package we appealed to our school community through the newsletter for toys, books and food to send over. Everyone gave so so much! They really showed they cared. Room 4 and 2 made special easter bunnies for the children of Vanuatu and Miss O'B organised for the goods to get to the right charity during the school holidays.
Here is Room 5 with the wonderful generous gifts from the community to support the recovery in Vanuatu.
 Thank you everyone :)

Careers Day 2015 By Miss O'B

Careers Day 2015

Every two years in Room 5 we learn about different careers and what they are all about using the 'On the Job' resource. At the end of the unit to celebrate all of our learning and to get an appreciation for what it is like to work in the real world each student goes out to a workplace for the day. They complete a series of learning experiences and write up a review following the day out.
A special 'thank you' to all the organisations and workplaces for having the students for the day and to our wonderful parents for organising this rich experience.
Here are a range of photos of Room 5 'On the job!'
