Mid Winter Swim 2015

Toko Wins Mid Winter Swim Prize By Toko Bumble Bees

On Friday 19th June Charlotte, Emma, Molly, Julia and Miss O'B travelled up to Ngamotu Beach in New Plymouth to take part in the Mid Winter Swim 2015.
Charlotte and Molly convinced Miss O'B to enter to try and win the teacher swim prize for the classroom. We had a great time and the water was very cold! We dressed up as bumble bees and Miss O'B was Queen Bee.
The girls organised all of the costumes as we wanted to represent Toko School with our colours.
We had alot of success at the event!
We won best dressed prize over all, Miss O'B won a spot prize and we won the classroom prize of a free trip for our class to trampoline airzone in New Plymouth and lunch for the class. We now just have to see if Mrs Waite will let us go!
A great time swimming in the rain had by all! We even made the internet and paper! :)

Beauden Barrett comes to town! Hurricanes versus Chiefs

All Black and Hurricanes takes the Rowan's for a training clinic! By Miss O'B

On Friday 12th June the Hurricanes came to town to play the Chiefs in a Super 15 rugby match. The Toko students were lucky enough to be able to enter a competition to win a training session with Beauden Barrett, Callum Gibbons and Nehe Milner-Skudder. Rowan C won the competition and was able to take a friend with him so he took Rowan.
They had a great morning of learning how to kick correctly, interacting with the players and learning new techniques to add to their game.
A special 'thank you' to Aaron Moore for setting this up and giving our children a chance to be involved.
 Well done Rowan and Rowan!

Collaboration in Action! By Miss O'B

Ngaere, Inglewood, Stratford and Toko begin student collaboration in Year 7 & 8

The NITS cluster of schools (Ngaere, Inglewood, Stratford and Toko) have come together to cross fertilise our growing learners in a technological world. We are collaborating! Here are some Year 7 & 8 reading, analysing and commenting on students work from the other through their blogs and email drives. In return the students from afar are doing the same. It is causing quite a buzz in Room 5!
Questions arise like: Who commented on what?  I can see how I can change that? What else can I put up to get feedback on? I wonder what this vocabulary word or phrase means... etc.
Here are some students comments on the process and how they feel about it all.
"Getting feedback from people and listening to their opinions has made me a better writer" Rowan S
"I like going onto class blogs and seeing what other classes are doing" Josh
"I like looking at the set learning goals feedback. It makes me rework my work based on their comment" Conor
"Hearing feedback is cool. I take their comments on my work, work on it and fix them up. It helps with my next time to take it and learn from it. I also like getting all the new ideas." Rowan C
"I enjoy looking at other schools blogs and getting some ideas to put on my blog" Molly

So as you can see we are all enjoying the experience....below collaboration in action!!

Totem Poles for Room 5 By Miss O'B

Room 5 begin the journey to create our own school Totem Poles

Room 5 have been researching and learning all about the history about of Totem Poles and how they
came about. We have looked at different areas of the school we would like to place them in. We have decided to work in groups of five to design, shape and create them. We chose our group and designs though a series of tests and anaylsis to ensure we were all happy with who we were working with and why. We are going to try our best to personalise the Totem Poles to Toko School and what they
mean to us. Please watch this space........
